On behalf of the Local Organizing
Committee of the XXIX IAHR Congress and the congress host - Chinese Hydraulic Engineering
Society (CHES), we sincerely welcome you from all over the world to Beijing to attend the
IAHR Congress, 16-21 September 2001. We believe that with your participation and
contribution, the XXIX IAHR Congress will be a success. It is our extreme pleasure to note
that over 50 countries and regions are represented at the congress, and that more than 650
papers are presented in the technical programs.
The XXIX IAHR Congress is the first one in
the New Century. The central Theme " 21st Century: The New Era for Hydraulic Research and Its
Applications" is developed
into five sub-themes, encompassing broad aspects of hydraulics, water resources and
disasters, ecological and environmental science - research and engineering applications.
In addition, the seminars, workshops, symposium, and student paper competition will also
be held.
We believe that because of a great effort
made by the Local Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee as well as IAHR Council, the
XXIX IAHR Congress will be professionally rewarding and personally enjoyable for every one
being here. We hope that your experience with the Congress will be productive and
influenced by the friendliness and hospitality for which Chinese people are known. We also
hope you will keep a pleasant memory of the Congress in the future.
